Job Summary

The Director of Human Resources will report directly to the President and serve as a key member of the executive leadership team. This senior HR position requires 10+ years of progressive HR experience (including at least three years at the director level), with a strong generalist background. You will develop and execute strategic HR initiatives—such as succession planning, talent management, organizational development, benefits administration, compliance, and compensation—to support the company’s growth and operational goals in the plastics industry.


Key Responsibilities

  • HR Department Management:
    • Plan, develop, implement, direct, and evaluate all HR functions, policies, and programs that align with organizational objectives.
    • Manage departmental budget, financial metrics, and key HR performance indicators.
    • Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local compliance regulations.
  • Training and Development:
    • Design and maintain comprehensive talent development plans, including training curricula and leadership programs.
    • Oversee performance management processes, annual reviews, and career-pathing frameworks.
  • Recruiting and Retention:
    • Develop strategic recruiting, onboarding, and retention plans to meet current and future workforce needs.
    • Establish a competitive compensation philosophy and administer compensation programs to attract and retain top talent.
  • Employee Relations:
    • Conduct employee interviews to address morale, performance, and workplace issues; collaborate with management to determine corrective actions.
    • Mediate conflicts, provide counseling resources, and advise leadership on workforce concerns.
  • Benefits and Compensation/Plan Administration:
    • Develop and oversee company benefit programs—health insurance, retirement plans, and other perks—to ensure cost-effective, competitive offerings.
    • Administer payroll systems, track wage and benefits changes, and maintain attendance and vacation records.
    • Serve as Plan Administrator for the company’s 401(k) plan.
  • Legal and Compliance:
    • Review and update policies to maintain legal compliance in areas such as labor relations, OSHA, EEOC, safety, wage and hour, and workers’ compensation.
    • Monitor legislative changes, advise leadership on new requirements, and implement policy modifications.
  • Organizational Development:
    • Define, develop, and communicate policy and procedural changes to align with business goals and compliance standards.
    • Assist supervisors and managers with employee counseling, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
  • Safety:
    • Investigate workplace injuries, file required reports, and manage workers’ compensation claims.
    • Track and report OSHA data related to workplace accidents.
    • Serve as an active member of the Safety Committee.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive HR experience, including at least three years at the director level or higher.
  • Strong HR generalist skills, including talent management, organizational development, employee relations, and benefits administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment legislation and regulations (OSHA, EEOC, wage & hour, workers’ comp, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically while managing day-to-day HR operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills; ability to work effectively at all organizational levels.
  • High ethical standards, professionalism, and the ability to respond quickly to changing business needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • SPHR or PHR certification (or equivalent).
  • Experience in a manufacturing or plastics industry environment.
  • Proven success implementing succession planning and comprehensive talent development programs.
  • Familiarity with ERP or HRIS systems for payroll, benefits, and performance tracking.
