Job Summary

The Clinical Manager, ER (RN) is a senior-level registered nurse responsible for overseeing all clinical operations in the emergency department. Reporting to hospital administration, you will lead a multidisciplinary team, manage staffing and budgets, implement policies, and ensure high-quality patient care and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of emergency nursing experience, demonstrated leadership in a fast-paced setting, and strong clinical decision-making skills.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Leadership:
    • Oversee daily ER workflow, staffing, and resource allocation to maintain optimal patient throughput.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures that align with regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission, state health department).
  • Clinical Oversight:
    • Ensure delivery of evidence-based clinical practices; monitor key performance indicators such as length of stay, readmission rates, and patient satisfaction.
    • Conduct regular quality and safety audits; lead root-cause analyses for adverse events and spearhead improvement initiatives.
  • Staff Management & Development:
    • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate ER nursing staff and support personnel.
    • Create and maintain orientation and continuing education programs; facilitate competency assessments and clinical skills training.
  • Budget & Resource Management:
    • Develop and manage the ER budget, including staffing, supplies, and equipment.
    • Monitor expenses and recommend cost-optimization strategies without compromising patient care.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
    • Coordinate with physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary departments (radiology, lab, transport), and support services to streamline patient flow and resolve bottlenecks.
    • Serve as liaison between administration, medical staff committees, and external regulatory agencies.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation:
    • Ensure the department meets or exceeds accreditation standards (e.g., TJC) and state licensure requirements.
    • Lead preparedness drills for disaster response, mass casualty incidents, and code situations.
  • Performance Improvement:
    • Analyze clinical data, patient outcomes, and satisfaction metrics; implement performance improvement plans and best practices.
    • Present findings and recommendations to executive leadership and the Quality Improvement Committee.

Qualifications

  • Licensure & Education:
    • Current RN license in [State] (multistate licensure preferred).
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s in Nursing Administration or Healthcare Leadership preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of progressive emergency nursing experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
    • Proven track record managing a high-volume emergency department or critical care unit.
  • Clinical Expertise:
    • In-depth knowledge of ER protocols, triage systems, and acute care interventions.
    • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner) and quality reporting tools.
  • Leadership Skills:
    • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities under pressure.
    • Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills.
  • Regulatory Knowledge:
    • Thorough understanding of Joint Commission standards, OSHA regulations, CMS requirements, and state nursing regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Nursing Administration, Healthcare Leadership, or a related field.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.
  • Lean or Six Sigma certification preferred.
  • Experience with budget management and financial forecasting in a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated success in leading interdisciplinary quality improvement projects.
